Introduction

This is Part 1 in a 3-part course in Real Estate Data Analysis. This first part is designed for beginners with little to no experience in Excel, descriptive statistics, or managing data.

Data play an increasingly important role in the decisions made by real estate investors and managers. The rapid growth of data providers like CoStar demonstrates how much value is being placed on accessing and understanding data.

Most adults do not know how to manage and interpret data, and even fewer know how to employ statistics to turn their data into information. We designed this set of resources to be relevant and applicable to the real world and to give you the necessary tools to make informed decisions using data.

By the end of this set of resources, you will have built the necessary tools to analyze your own data and make informed decisions with statistics. You will be able to better manage large data sets that are prevalent in the real estate industry, and you will have developed concrete skills demanded by employers.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of this, you will be able to:

  1. Analyze large datasets using descriptive statistics in order to determine key characteristics of the data (mean, median, standard deviation, skew, etc.)

  2. Identify and classify data errors in data, implement steps to clean datasets, and improve dataset accuracy.

  3. Derive conclusions from data in Excel using pivot tables and scatterplots.

  4. Clearly communicate your message through graphs and charts.
